Why choose YarnArt Imperial Merino?
  • Extra Fine Merino: YarnArt Imperial Merino is 100% extra fine merino wool at 100 m per 50 g. This worsted/aran-weight yarn works on 5 mm needles or a hook for warm sweaters, hats and cowls.
  • Clear Cables and Ribbing: The soft strand shows cables, arans and lace clearly and holds ribbing well. One maker found it slightly thinner than similar merinos and went down a needle size.
  • Soft Next-to-Skin Knits: Sweaters, hats and cowls stay soft at the neck, and one maker saw no pilling after several washes. It is not machine washable: hand wash at 30°C, dry flat and expect slight growth with wear.
Description

YarnArt Imperial Merino – 100% Extra Fine Merino Wool

YarnArt Imperial Merino represents the pinnacle of wool softness. Crafted from 100% Extra Fine Merino Wool, this yarn utilizes only the finest, thinnest fibers to ensure a texture that is incredibly smooth and non-irritating. It is the ultimate choice for knitting garments that touch the skin directly, such as turtlenecks, cowls, and premium baby clothes.

💡 Knitting Tip: The natural elasticity of high-quality merino makes this yarn a dream for cables and textured stitches. It creates a bouncy, well-defined fabric that retains its shape beautifully.

Why choose Extra Fine Merino?

  • Zero Itch Factor: Unlike rustic wools, "Extra Fine" merino is silky smooth, making it suitable for people with sensitive skin and for knitting soft yarn for kids projects.
  • Natural Breathability: This pure wool fiber offers excellent thermal regulation—keeping you warm in the cold while allowing moisture to escape, so you stay dry and comfortable.
  • Versatile Weight: The DK/Light Worsted gauge is perfect for a wide range of projects, offering quick progress without being too bulky.

TIPS & TRICKS

Pro Tip: Swatch on 4.5 mm as well as 5 mm and keep the firmer fabric: merino relaxes with wear, and a slightly denser gauge keeps cuffs and hems neat. YarnArt estimates about 500 g, ten balls, for a medium sweater, so buy one dye lot.

About Product

Is YarnArt Imperial Merino itchy?

Extra fine merino is one of the least prickly wools, and Imperial Merino is 100% extra fine merino, so it suits cowls, turtlenecks and hats worn right against the skin. It is also certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Very wool-sensitive skin can still react to any wool, so wear a small swatch against your neck before a big project.

Is YarnArt Imperial Merino good for baby clothes?

Yes. It is 100% extra fine merino and certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which tests for harmful substances, so it works well for baby cardigans, hats and wraps. Merino is warm and breathable, but it needs hand washing. If the parents want machine-washable knits, a wool-acrylic blend such as YarnArt Super Merino is easier to care for.

How many balls of Imperial Merino for a hat or a baby cardigan?

An adult beanie in worsted-weight yarn usually needs about 150–200 m, so plan on 2 balls of 100 m, or 3 for a slouchy or heavily cabled hat. A baby cardigan for 0–12 months typically takes 300–450 m, which is 3–5 balls. Cables and textured stitches use more yarn than stockinette, so round up.

Can YarnArt Imperial Merino go in the washing machine?

Treat it as hand wash only: the care advice is a 30 °C hand wash. Soak the piece in lukewarm water with a wool detergent, squeeze gently without rubbing or wringing, roll it in a towel to remove water and dry flat away from heat. Agitation and sudden temperature changes are what make pure merino felt.
